I see many great answers, but web hosting companies are rated also by their tier. Most of these mentioned are lower level tier hosting providers hostgator i think is tier 5 not sure. they might be awesome and have large consumer base I personally use Shawk Technology

http://www.shawktech.com

their backbone is a tier 5 facility, they produce their own electric, and supply, or can supply up to 60,000 local residence with electricity. They are state of the art and use their own storm cloud platform. at anytime you can scale servers up and down into smaller or bigger sizes. If you decide to run a T.V. Commercial and know you will get tons of traffic that bogs server down you can scale up and back down. Clone servers, offer your own Private parent clouds and split it up into true VPS. Their dedicated servers are ALL SSD technology, with raid 10. Pretty beefy stuff

Their shared hosting is no where near being overloaded. they only host to 50% -60% capacity leaving tons of room for individual site growth. I just updated out company to a VPS, and love it.
