Is the Indian govt. right in asking FB,Google etc to remove objectionable content or face a ban?

Yes. Their country, their rules.

A private company has no right to violate the laws of another country ... whatever those laws happen to be.

It is up to the people that live in India to decide ... not a foreign corporation.
