My thoughts are that if he's emotionally abusive, then just because he wants to pretend like nothing's wrong doesn't mean you have to play along. If you don't want to talk to him, then don't make small talk. If you aren't comfortable with him hovering around, ask him to please leave you alone or you'll have to go talk to his supervisor. If you're afraid he's stalking you on social media, block him and lock down your privacy settings. And above all, don't worry about what his intentions are. They don't matter.
