Complete your fafsa for the new year. Choose all the schools you thinking about even if your undecided. Each school will give you a financial aid package answering these questions.
Out of state is more expensive then your home state.
The school housing is rarely a problem and can be figured out when you choose your school or at least top 3.
Moving is scary, but everyone makes friends.
Most schools have message boards or Facebook groups to make friends ahead of time.
I am also a Californian transplanted to New York...be prepared for really cold winters!
