Hi Dana,

These days there are some good free search engine optimization tools available that will get the job done sufficiently; however in certain circumstances, you need the extra edge of a paid service, Here are my favorite paid and free in each category:

Keyphrase Research:
Paid: http://www.WordTracker.com
Free: Google Keyword Suggestion Tool, Google Insights, SEO Book

Analytics:
Paid: ClickTracks
Free: GoogleAnalytics

LinkBuilding:
Free: Valid Rank
Paid: (I won't use a paid Link Building tool anymore--most are garbage.)

Competition:
Free: Alexa
Free with fee-based upgrade: Compete
