Haven't you answered your own question, shown under your "Additional Details"???

Yes, Google is changing things, and they don't always get things right the first time.

So, if enough people complain to Google, they will come up with a better idea, eventually.

TIP: In Chrome's Advanced Settings, just try different Fonts, and screen magnifications, for the time being.
