Yeah the best option is to hire some SEO experts for your site, as it is a bit difficult task to get effective and positive results for any novice.
However, if you want to do it yourself, then I would suggest you to have a basic knowledge first. You can do this by participating in SEO forums. You can also read articles and blog posts of various SEO experts. Once you get basic knowledge, you can start building quality backlinks on authoritative and relevant sites.
