When your lid closes, the interfaces, display, and CPU turn off. That's what you've "told" your OS to do, so it does so.

When the interface to the Internet turns off, the connection drops. So, what's happening is a consequence of your current "power option" settings - which you can change by right-clicking the battery icon there in the right-hand end of your bottom tray bar.

As far as I know, in all of computerdom, only the XO-1 from One Laptop Per Child is capable of turning off the CPU and have the wireless interface connection to the Internet (and other XO-1's) stay live. Every other computer in existence won't keep a connection in sleep mode, much less hibernate.

If your brother's machine stays connected, then he has his lid-closing set to turn off the screen - and keep everything else on. Change your battery power settings to do the same when you close the lid - but don't expect your battery to last much longer than it does just sitting there on battery and open with the screen on dim.

Some interface drivers are programmed to reinitialize on "wakeup" - so waiting about 15 seconds and then doing a simple browser screen refresh or reload might bring things back to life right where you were before closing your lid. This will also work if you manually restart the Internet connection and then refresh the browser.

BTW, all of the steps above apply identically whether your OS of choice is Linux or Windows.
