Before choosing a SEO company, here is what you need to do:

Get a FREE analysis from several companies. If they won't do one, I wouldn't use that company
Ask for a client ranking list and testimonials. Whatever city they are in, Google "(the city) search engine optimization". If they aren't at the top of the first page, or at least on the top page organically (naturally), it means they aren't practicing what they are preaching, and I'd move on. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=tam...gle+Search
Don't go with a company that wants to lock you into a long term contact. If they are as good as they say, you will be happy with your rankings increases, and would have no reason to leave.
