windows xp updates after 4/8/14?

Well the updates for XP is gone, but the updates for your programs like flash, reader, shockware and etc is not dead. But you should go for Windows 7 if you want support and fixes. Suggest install Vista with SP2 built in as an upgrade path to 7, then install 7 on top of that, if you do care about saving your personals files like documents, videos, and pictures. That personal stuff is saved in a folder called Windows.old.

But much more cleaner experience is to backup your data to external HDD or DVD. Then run Windows 7 installation from outside Windows XP and grab the drivers for 7 from the manufacturer. Drivers for vista also work in 7, some drivers for XP also work in 7. Update Windows using Windows update, make sure Microsoft Security Essentials is not selected if you plan to install your favorite antivirus. Install your free avast antivirus program. Then install your desired programs like MS office and your good to go.
