Brand promotion and SEO are two different approaches. While both approaches aim at popularizing your website, increase traffic.. there are certain differences.

In regular SEO you focus on specific keywords relating to your niche, business and target those keywords to drive the traffic to your website.

While in branding your "Brand Name ( either your website or your business name) forms One of your main keyword." The promotion is made in such a way that if the end user remembers any product or service relating to your niche the Brand name should come to their mind. Just like if you remember tooth paste immediately you remember colgate or some brand.. if one say cool drink immediately pepsi or coke comes to your visual memory.

However branding is more difficult than regular SEO and you must have well planned strategy to make branding successful.
