1) Yes, "I'm taking bass lessons to expand my repertoire."
Meaning: He's learning more songs to add to his [mental]collection of songs he already knows how to play. The bass is a bass guitar... an instrument.

2) "I have been off work with pneumonia for the last two weeks"
Meaning: pneumonia is a contagious (spreadable) illness that affects the respiratory system (lungs). He's been staying home from work the last two weeks because he's sick.
