How the freak do you use twitter!!!!?

I have had a twitter account since January and I never went on it cause I never knew how to use it. But every now and then I get emails saying Consider me dead followed me and the guitarist from BOTDF followed me and I get SO excited, but then I think, I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW. I just need some help. What are the basics of twitter? How do you basically use it? How do you get more followers and is it anywhere close to the same as Facebook or Instagram?? Please help. I really want to get on twitter and explore more but I have no idea how to freaking use twitter. Im clueless
