I could "survive"... and lived the first 25 years of my life without a cell-phone (I had one of the first in the late 1980s, and 30+ years of my life without high-speed internet.
However, since I've become accustomed to the ability to research, shop, and communicate over the internet in the last decade... it would NOT be a HAPPY life if I lost that connection. That said... we still have a land-line here at the ranch - in our area we give our phone numbers by the last 4 digits since EVERYONE in the county is 209-754-XXXX. We have to have satellite internet and television because the phone company (and the cable company) are too CHEAP to string the fiber-optic cable out into our area. Hell, I had to build my own cell-tower for our ranch with a microwave antenna bounce to the phone company offices 70 miles away. EDIT - Oh... in the winter of 2009 - our ranch lost power for 14 days - no internet, TV, or anything. THAT was rough |
