How to share internet connection over LAN ?

I have setup LAN between my desktop and laptop both running Windows XP, I have broadband connection and a modem Huawei SmartAX MT882, ADSL CPE, tried everything but failed to share internet connection between both, I have set desktop as a server and laptop as client, on desktop in tcp/ip setting i've set obtain DNS server automatically, obtain IP address automatically, and on laptop set it to 192.162.0.1,
, i ve checked on few sites but the options differs and doesnt works, another thing is that my friend told me its single user modem so you cann't share connection via LAN, is it true?

please tell me step by step process to share the internet connection

I dont wish to buy any further hardware, and wants to share it with whatever I have, I have ethernet LAN card on both the machines, and I can successfully access files from both via LAN that means LAN connection has to be ok..
