Since you're starting with SEM, it is very likely that you are going to be learning about things like PPC etc very soon. You don't have to be worried though as basic SEO and SEM don't require in-depth know how of these and their working but if you want to learn about good sound SEO and SEM techniques and are learning all this especially to avoid fraudulent people and optimization and marketing tactics then a basic knowledge of this is a must. They are not that hard or bad to learn about when you get you basic skills refined. You'll in fact find them quite interesting. Plus if what you're after is a complete idea of SEO and SEM as you stated, then there is no way you can avoid these other techniques.
