First thing to keep mind, don't the leaning from anime and manga. They often do not follow typical grammatical structures,i.e. they often take liberty in shaking things up language wise. In short, it's not everyday japanese.
As for where to start, if you don't have the option to take classes then at the very least pick up a textbook. I recommend Genki -- it's the text my Japanese college course uses. Then follow the book from start to finish. It will start you off with bare essential vocab and, of course, hiragana and katakana. Kanji comes a later and is a very long process. Don't expect to know all 2000 commonly used kanji within a few months time. Good luck! |
