do you get an ip address from the router? go to start. run. and type in cmd. this will bring up a cmd promt window in there type "ipconfig" to see your current ip address. it should be 192.168.x.x if it is 169.x.x.x then you are not talking with the router. look into firewalls or possibly a driver or bad nic. if your getting 192.168.x.x address then try pinging google.com by typing ping google.com if packets are returned you have an internet connection. i would look into internet explorer settings at that point. if it has a good ip address but wont ping google.com there could be a dns issue try to ping 72.14.207.99 if that returns packets then you should look into possible virus or spyware infections on the pc also run winsock fix 2 and lspfix on the machine to varify all default settings are in place.

if you are getting a 192.168.x.x address it is also possible that you have set up a static ip under the wrong subnet. winsock fix 2 would help this as well. google winsock fix 2 and get a copy to run on there incase. (obviously youll have to get it on your xp machine and then use a flash drive, cd, or floppy to move it to the 2000 machine.

other than that there is no network set up or adding computers. your internet connection is manged with tcp/ip protocol in network connections. period. see if any of that helps.
