Here are some ideas:

Start/Control Panel/Internet Options and click on the Connections Tab.

Look at the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box and one by one select each connection listed in this box and then select 'Remove' for each item. When you finish, the box should be empty.

Go to the bottom of the screen and click the LAN settings Button. Under the Automatic configuration section section, put a check-mark in the box next to 'Automatically detect settings' and click on the OK Button. Then click on the OK button again on the Internet Properties box and it will close out and save your new settings.

This should take care of the problem but if it still returns, then you can go to the Start/Control Panel/Network Connections and see if you have more than one connection icon. You should have one for the LAN connection and if you have more then determine which one is really for the LAN (right click/properties) and delete the others. This will get rid of all connections except the LAN connection so you shouldn't have any more trouble. If you do, you can always go through the Internet Options/Connections Tab/Setup Internet connection Button and it will start the setup wizard again and you can re-establish the LAN connection.
