For Banking these two programs take over where antivirus programs stop. I only turn them on when accessing my bank account or entering passwords, and turn them off for regular computer usage.
1) "KeyScrambler" free or Pro version. This program scrambles your key strokes, so if someone is monitoring your keypad they will see different keystrokes. I just wrote the word "jim and it wrote 88x" cause I had it turned on to enter my Yahoo password. It displays a small tab showing what my keystrokes have been changed into.
2) Zemana Antilogger stops other stuff. It prevents someone making a log of my passwords, prevents screen captures, web cam and microphone take overs etc.
I bought the pro versions of each cause I'm a security paranoiac but their free version have enough components for what you are asking. For instance KeyScrambler Pro works for Microsoft Word and text files and many other documents. I use the pro cause I have my passwords in a text file.

As far as prevention I use Avast free, MalwareBytes Pro, Spybot Search & Destroy and Comodo Firewall
BTW Microsoft is ending support for Microsoft Security Essentials in the near future after ending support for Windows XP in a few days on April 8th 2014. Plus it's only an Antivirus. Avast is CNET's #1 top rated free Antivirus. It also scans you email, browser and web sites etc. It also has free online support directly to a chat technician and can track a lost or stolen computer, tablet, cell phone etc etc
