technically your mom wasted $150 not you and in a way yes because 4 and 5 is the latest, apple has no interest in bringing new features for iphone 3gs and yes 3gs does have instagram. i have an iphone 3gs and i'm hoping i can change it for the latest versions especially since i can't download most apps as it requires the latest OS.
because u only care about instagram, i think you'll be okay.
