A good place to start with is the content. Make sure the site has good and unique content. Flash websites do not perform good with search engines. So you should avoid these. There are some guidelines mentioned here: http://thenewdegree.com/the-15-day-seo-course
The list on that web page basically sums up in a nutshell the basics of search-engine friendliness.
