There are sites with tools that help you come up with fictitious names, including: wordlab.com, naming.net, wordoid.com, lingzini.com, namestation.com, some of these tools look up the domain name availability as you go.

Does Tumblr limit it to 8 chars?

Try entering jelly into wordoid.com, probably as the word end and see what words it invents, try looking through 100 or more for one that suits you.
