Being positive and upbeat is probably the most important thing I can tell you. Avoid being the one who constantly complains about others or whatever situation you find yourself in. If you are happy and positive people will want to be around you. Be accepting of other's differences. You don't have to agree with them but that doesn't mean you can't respect them and be friends.
You don't sound like you're too happy with your current circle of friends. Seek out people who share the same interest as you and who share some of the same values. The internet is a great way to make new contacts.
Be positive and always look forward to the future.
