It is highly suggested to upgrade to windows 8.1, or to buy a new computer, I believe microsoft has a promotional offer giving you a hundred dollars off $500 or more purchase, if you are upgrading from windows xp. If you really cant afford it, upgrade to the newest windows xp version (Service pack 3, etc), download google chrome:
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/ (for the next links, open them in google chrome),
put adblock:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detai...idom?hl=en
and https everywhere:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detai...jbdp?hl=en
on it, and get malwarebytes:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/
or another free anti virus software, and always make sure to update all of your programs that use a browser (such as java, and flash) because these can provide back doors, and loopholes to help viruses.
also be sure to use Ccleaner:
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
to help rid yourself of files that could possibly be useless/ at risk of having a virus
and to keep your hard drive running as fast as possible, run a full defrag using defraggler: http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler

-another way to make yourself secure is to use a new OS such as linux, or ubuntu, see guides on the internet to figure out how to install them/use them.

-good luck.
