SEO is a process and takes time, thats the first thing you should know and understand. You have to see what keyword you are competing for and how many search results come up, if its over 400k or so, thats a good amount of competition.

Try to optimize your website for the long-tail keyword: http://palatnikfactor.com/2008/10/02/the...-position/

Time is a tricky factor as there is no set answer.
