The market cap in the stock market is the same as what people pay for in real estate. In the stock market however, it is a constantly variable number based on economic factors and investors perceptions or expectations of future results. This value can increase drastically in a take-over attempt, because the proposed takeover offerer sees additional value by adding the company into his operation.
