No. you do not need a network. This is how mutual friends work.

Person 1: You (Alex)
Person 2: Your Friend 1 (Joey)
Person 3: Your Friend 2 (Bill)
Person 3: Friend 2's Freind 1. (Joey)

You have Joey & Bill as friends.

If Bill had Joey on his friends list too, Joey would be a mutual friend between you and bill.
