Am interested in photography. I plan to buy good dslr camera. Can you suggest what camera to buy?

Am basically a graphic designer.Photography is my hobby. I take photos wherever I go using my point and shoot camera (Kodak) or my mobile camera (Samsung galaxy). As a graphic designer I know little about photography and a lot about photoshop. But love to learn photography. So I always take photos and read some tips in internet. My friends say that dslr camera is for professional photographers only and it will not be useful to me because I cant carry it always with me.

Am interested in all genres of photography except studio based. I created a page in facebook for my photos. https://www.facebook.com/colourfulfoto?ref=hl Please look at it and tell me what camera I have to buy dslr or some higher version point and shoot camera? Or any higher end mobile or apps will serve my thirst. Am interested to capture birds, insects and all nature based things. I guess shutter speed and aperture controls are available only in dslr camera. Thanks in advance.
