More than likely, she's nervous. Girls are taught to be very wary of guys they haven't actually met in person and more than likely the idea of meeting you scares her a little. She also might be afraid she won't live up to your expectations or that you won't live up to hers. She could just want to keep this in internet-land,where her friendship isn't blurred by real life. Also, she might just be inexperienced and nervous to go out with you or to have a boyfriend. The fact that her friend had to talk to you about that says that she might not be ready for a relationship. Asking her out probably spooked her and now she probably feels awkward talking to you or is second-guessing the fact that she's spending so much time talking to a guy online or by phone. If you really want the relationship to continue, you have to tell her how you feel and give her the space to make a decision. That's all you can really do.
