How do people get friends so quickly?

I'm in my first year of college along with another 1000 students but the weird this is it's only been a few months yet people who went to my high school are friends with people from other high schools and are already texting each other, talking on twitter and going to each other's parties?!

I am a talkative person and I will always make an effort with people and I go out with my friends when I can but I don't see how others can be so close after no time. I don't do clubs or have a part time job because of college work and these people often do have jobs and go to clubs but I don't see how that can get you to make friends so quickly!

For a starter, asking a person who you only speak to in college and have known for only two months, for their phone number is incredibly awkward and sounds creepy in my opinion. But I'm not shy so I do follow them on twitter but I don't feel close to them even though they are close to people they have only just met. Am I doing something wrong?
