It depends on the location. In 2000 I was able to rent a two bedroom apartment for $425 per month, which included water. The deposit was $850. It was hard to find it that low then, and prices have only gone up since. You can contact the social services office department of emergency housing to find out what they consider to be the fair market value. In New Jersey in 2005, the fair market value of a single bedroom apartment was $701 per month.
