One of the basic kindles would be perfect for what you've stated.

You could opt for the most basic version that only allow web browsing in wifi hotspots only (so you would need to setup wireless internet at home):

or for a little more you could opt for the 3g keyboard kindle, which allows you to browse the web anywhere for free (with no monthly fees)- not just wifi hotspots like the basic kindle above.!:

The experimental browser is actually decent. It's totally fine for blogs/news and email.
Accessing facebook possible in a pinch but fairly cumbersome, which from your description is a good thing - so it's not something you would be tempted to use. There is no flash support, so no youtube etc.

The thing that is really good on the basic kindles vs the kindle fire, is the basic kindles have a screen that doesn't cause eyestrain because they don't have a backlight. I can look at my keyboard kindle all day without any strain, so it's perfect for reading with natural overhead light. If you ever want to read in the dark you just get a clip on light.
The kindle fire screen has a standard color laptop type display, so its not really designed for long term reading - more for web browsing and watching movies.

I have the 3g keyboard kindle and I love it.
