My ex blocked me and we weren't even friends online?

Sounds EXACTLY what happened to me and my ex. I deleted him off Facebook when we broke up, and a couple weeks later I tried to search him and nothing came up - he had blocked me. It doesn't really make sense to me either, but what I can rationalize it with is that he likely was hurt by that, and wanted to either a) have the upper hand (blocking you being more significant than just deleting) or b) trying to hurt you. Either way, don't get upset by it. You guys aren't together and there is no difference between being blocked/deleted, even though being "blocked" seems a bit more permanent and hurtful...but it really isn't. Either way, he isn't in your life. Keep moving forward and do not get caught up in this
