Does he really just hate me or does he like me?

I used to be good friends with this guys in the first half of freshman year. it seemed he may of liked me back then, since we talked a lot on Facebook (since he's extremely quiet and hardly knew anybody at school except for me, since he was the only kid that came from his middle school to this high school (and hasnt really made friends since)) here are some things that may point to that he liked me back then:
-during this dinner party thing my grade had one day, i was sitting/eating alone at a round table, however, he came and sat right next to me. we talked a little and continued having little chats throughout the rest of day ( i know that's not much, but believe me, he's REALLY quiet, so this is somewhat surprising)
-he said on the chat once in a sort of way that he liked me, but may of been joking, idk, but it was when i asked him what he got for christmas and he said "i got the best gift of all. you."
-he'd often joke around with me on the chat (he is not a very open person, so surprising again), even if we talked about something serious, say concerning myself, he'd always try to lighten the mood.

but after a while, i started annoying him by talking to him at school in public a lot (i didnt really mean to be annoying, i was just trying to be friendly and get to know him better in person, but i do admit i was kind of immature about it, unfortunately, since i was a ninth grader...) so he stopped being my friend and blocked me on fb. i really wished i never annoyed him in the first place. i told him a couple of times afterward towards the end of freshman year and in sophmore year that i was sorry, but he never gave a reply of "i forgive you" or "i don't care" or something like that. sometimes i couldnt finsih saying my sorries, because my voice would crack halfway through.

however, in the beginning of junior year, i told my friend about my situation, and she said to tell him i was sorry again, and to say "i miss you" straight forward, and to tell him i was different and would like to talk again, ending it with giving him my email/cell. i tried doing just that, even saying the "i miss you" part, to which he replied "Okay." but he gave my info card back and said "i dont want to talk to you". i left the card there, so he may still have it, i dont know, but he never called or messaged me.

its weird, becuase after that, he's started looking at me more: i'll be walking through a crowd of people in a hallway, and ill catch him staring directly at me as he passes by quickly. or sometimes in the library, he'll be sitting at a desk and i'll be on the computer, and ill try to steal a glance at him (since i'm facing him, only to be blocked off by another computer other than mine), and i see that he was already looking at me and i kind of stupidly/awkwardly look at back at my computer in a quick way.

and then this year, we had to pick out groups from any class to do a history project with, and this asianguy recruited me into a group, and said there still needed to be one more member (it was only me and the asain guy so far, and the minimum group members is three), so he told me he was going to ask my crush to join (the asian guy doesn't know that's my crush though). he asked and told me my crush "doesnt want to join US", meaning he must of mentioned me while asking, so now i get the feeling the only reason he declined is because I was in the group (my crush isnt in another group yet, fyi)
but then my history teacher told me there were three guys in our year that still didnt have group, and showed me the list, and my crush's name was on it. i didnt know what to do, or pass up the chance, so i chose my crush and some other guy.
HOWEVER, there was an extra person that also needed a group, so my history teacher decided to move my crush my group to the other two boys to make another group >8( i didnt like it at all....(i have no classes with my crush this year)

the next day, me and my group (Which is two other boys) came to the library to talk about our project, and my crush was sitting right at the entrance, and he looked straight at me as i came in with the boys. he looked at me strangely, as in it was not indifferent or mad or anything, he looked at me like...i don't know really. it was just different, i could tell.

he still glances at me sometimes in the hall, or when i pass by him, or am in the library too though.

i don't get it, what's his deal????

please remember he's really quiet and doesnt talk a lot, however, when you get to know him, he can have a sarcastic/clever/funny attitude.
