If a modem is the pathway to the internet, don't I need to good modem to make my internet fast?

It is unlikely you are EVER going to get 300 Mbps on fibre optics. The most available as standard is 40 Mbps, with few offering 80 Mbps at extra cost. Any more than that and you can expect to pay hundreds a month for the service. Mostly that would only give you 100 Mbps. You seriously need to check what bandwidth your actual provider says you can get. And they are legally bound to quote you UP TO a certain speed, you might never actually get that.
