How do I change my profile picture?

I went to "my activity", clicked on "edit my preferences", then went on "update photo", and then a little box came onto the middle of my screen and it showed my current photo (which is the normal one, the plain one with a white exclamation mark) and it said "add photo" on the bottom. I clicked "add photo" and it brought me to another page. But when I got to that page, I clicked "change photo" and all that came up was 'no picture' and 'connect to facebook'. I have no idea how to change it to what I want since I don't have facebook or twitter, which seems to be the only way. It used to let me change it but I guess Y!A was updated. Help?
