Why are people so stupid?

some people are doing something to advance things. we have a global network of millions of unsung scientific experts working dilligently to research interesting, relevant problems and communicating their findings with each other. It's a world so far removed from what people are exposed to in popular culture, the media, etc. but it's been going on for a long time and breaks new ground every single day. It is the only hope we have as it is the only thing that has ever really driven us forward as a species, and it grows at an exponential rate. Each new discovery yields multiple applications and enables further discoveries. Changes do not happen overnight, but they have happened and will continue to happen.
We're not all mindless, incompetent idiots, there are plenty of people around who have a brain in their heads and are putting it to good use, it's just that they rarely make the headlines.
