Well stay active, tweet a lot and interact with other people. Keep in mind you need to be intersting and actually give people a reason to follow you.

You can also ask friends and family to follow as well as join a social exchange website where you can exchange followers with other people looking to gain more followers. They are simple to use and usually you will get an even exchange, meaning you will get the same amount of followers as people you follow. Pretty cool.
