It's not always a guarantee that you get paid well for a job that you actually do for the first time. Experience and a venue to advertise your talents are probably the best strategy you can apply for your skills to be noticed before you expect to receive a decent pay, no matter you choose graphic design or illustration. Although the first is really more advantageous with today's technology.
Use social media (LinkIn, Twitter, Deviant Art or Comic presentation sites) as a way to share your work to the public. As you continuously share or market your work to related sites, you can try to send a sample of them to magazines and businesses that are big enough to send you a steady stream of work, rather than one-off projects. Make your talent known to other writers or illustrators and probably ask them for referrals as you slowly increase your network. I hope that helps.
