How is someone supposed to get by waiting on a disability claim?

Google "waiting for a settlement?", and see what pops up for you. There are many attorney's offices and companies that will give you an "Advance" against your claim. Don't know how it works for social security, but one of these places might be able to point you in the right direction for no cost. Good Luck!
