Based on your description, the issue is more likely related to the audio drivers. Please visit http://www.support.dell.com/ and input your Service Tag to get updated drivers specific to your computer.

If that doesn't help, try running the Dell Diagnostics Audio Tests. If it fails the speaker test, then there is the possibility of a damaged sense pin in the headphone jack. You can follow the instructions from http://dell.to/g8qNbJ
