It depends in large part on how you are downloading. Some website will try to install malicious software, and torrents sometimes have a virus hidden in a RAR file.

Best bet is always to have updated anti-virus software. I like to download from http://www.grabaid.com It is a paid service, but you can spot anything that might be a virus from a negative ranking.
