Is 512MB of RAM enough?

depends on screen size, the rom/firmware size, how system manage running apps(I guess 512mb can perform only a lightweight multitasking; 2-3 apps running), cpu and gpu type.
If it's an Android I guess the best solution is root the phone, delete any bloatware/unwanted apps, or install custom recovery and flash custom rom, or flash tweak scripts for better performance and memory manager to make the phone runs blazing fast.
