that something is nothing but the light sensor (also known as the proximity sensor). it turns off the screen as soon as ur ear covers that area during a call to avoid accidental touches on the screen with ur cheek.
im not sure bout the led notification but it has an awesome feature called as the active notifications. it turns on the screen everytime u pickup the phone. it uses ur proximity sensor and turns on the screen to pop up a little notification icon on the screen. its kind of smart!
