The # sign is called a number sign in north America, but called a hash mark in other English-speaking countries, and has been used in computer programming for decades to redirect to a certain subject heading on a page, or "tag" a particular topic. So when social media platform Twitter needed to provide users with ways to link tweets with the same subject, it is only natural they would use a hash mark to tag it, thus the term "hashtag"
So, when microblogging or posting about a particular topic or person online, you would put a hashtag before the name so others could find your comment among the rest on the same topic. Ads |
