Don't try for a girl friend at all just friends. Like if you are in a club or sports team invite a person or two to join you going out for coffee after, discuss the club or sport. Get on committees then when meeting break up whatever you are doing next see if anyone wants to join you like going out for desert. Don't hit on them or even pick young women be friendly to everyone and go out in groups.

Find your interest like school, sports, volunteering or career and find like minded people to socialize with eventually you will find one who you find special then invite her to a special event like a concert or a movie two or three times if she says yes the first time. Then after a few dates invite her to your home for waffles with whipped cream and strawberries on a Sunday morning. Eventually she might invite you to brunch at her house or to meet her family.
