You need to perform a reset of the computer.
To accomplish this, turn on the computer until it gets to the login page where you put in your password. In the bottom right of the screen is a power logo. You need to hold down shift and click on restart whole holding down shift. This should take you to advanced boot options where the reset option is located. If this is a Sony Vaio with an "assist" button, you can also turn off the computer, and power it on by hitting the "assist" button. The screen that pulls up should have Sony factory reset information. Selling a broken laptop sounds nasty to me. You should have it repaired while under warranty.
