Can an IP address be traced? I am being threatened?
ok so a few days ago someone made a fake facebook account of me for the second time in a year. The first time they just edited pictures of me and put makeup on my face. (I am a man). I filed a police report but didnt think too much about it. This time they made it under my name and they are talking about my brothers wife (I dont talk to my brother and she is the reason why) and saying that she is dead even though she is not so I filed another police report. Now her family members who think I made the account are threatening me (they are not in America while I am). I reported the account 3 or 4 times on facebook and they have still not replied. I sent them emails telling them I would get a notarized statement and whatever else they wanted but I just want to know who did it. I also emailed the Chief of police in my area and he replied once telling me he was sorry and asking for the police report number. I gave him it 2 days ago and he didnt reply since. I sent him another email this morning and he still did not reply. What else can I do? Do you think they will eventually tell me who made the account? Thanks

An IP address CAN NOT be traced back to the end user - EXCEPT by the Internet Service Provider that owns the IP and even if the FBI or Police try it takes a warrant.

IF you try to trace an IP, as far as you will get is the ISP.

You can trace the ISP to a degree. You can figure out the country (as long as there is no Proxy) and generally the city but any more than that will be unreliable. At that point you have to contact the ISP, and you may have to get further legal help in order to trace it to a name or address.

Other than calling or visiting the police station, I really don't know what to tell you.

You might want to sign up for LIfeLock (http://www.lifelock.com/). It is a phenomenal ID protection service that I personally use. That might clear it up, as they are pretty good at dealing with these kind of things.

Your IP address can be traced and your address can be found. Ive been on websites such as tumblr and seen posts were a person has literally found someones address by tracing their IP then using google earth to find their exact address then post it so EVERYBODY can see. I didn't know it was possible until I saw that. I googled it and found some ways you can hide your ip address from being seen.
