can you hide someone on your friends list in facebook?

i like a guy friend but i think he likes someone else (lets call her anna). He doesn't have her (anna) on his friends list on facebook but he recently added some of anna's close friends. I stalked anna's friends and his friends and her name shows up on their friends lists but not on his. Is that possible?
she also wrote to him on his birthday a year ago on fb which means that they were probably fb friends before?..i am so scared that he is talking to anna as we speak.

also, it is possible to talk to people on fb without having them as a friend..not through chat but by sending the private messages right?..ah im getting so paranoid

It is possible to communicate with each other even if you are not Facebook friends. Of course you can send each other private messages even if you aren't friends with someone.
